A veritable work of art in polished aluminum, the naked Spondon frame is a thing of great beauty and should only be accompanied by the very best components. So also thought this bike's English owner known simply as Andy, who decided that his Spondon frame would only be graced by the sort of top-shelf parts we all know and love: hlins, Marchesini, AP, Akrapovic, Galfer...the list goes on.
In order to provide the basic building blocks for the engine, Andy started the ball rolling with a complete 1998 Bandit 1200. The task of beating the Bandit motor with the big power stick was handed over to top tuner, Roger Upperton, who produced a handy 165 nags with the aid of a Wiseco big-bore kit, cams and some head work. Not a bad body count at all considering the stock Bandit carbs were retained, (albeit rejetted and fitted with K&N filters), and the Akrapovic exhaust headers were joined to a Zorstec stainless steel can that was custom made more for appearance than out and out performance. Keeping it all in one piece, the Bandit bits were fortified with a GSX-R1100 crank and clutch basket fitted with a MTC lock-up clutch.
Internet auction sites were routinely perused for choice morsels and netted the brand new Marchesini wheels and AP Racing radial master cylinders among other things, including the CBR1000RR triple clamps. Naturally, nothing less than an hlins rear shock would do to match the front forks to sort the major chassis mods.
Andy needed pillion carrying capabilities and thus chose a 2003 Yamaha R1 seat unit with recovered seat pads and a modified undertray, and to provide a lighting medium at the front along with a modicum of style, he fitted the distinctive stacked headlight fairing from the latest KTM Duke with a modified Gixxer 1000 front fender to complete the appearance mods.
