Sport Touring
OK, so maybe the notion seems like something more suitable for your mom and dad, but if you've ever gone for a weekend ride guess what? You're a sport tourer. It's twice the fun with a partner, because having someone to share some special scenery with is a lot better than talking to your tires.
Plan a route based on recommendations from others, or just throw a dart at the map and chase away-it really doesn't matter where.
Because the riding tends to be a bit more tame than during a flat out canyon run there's more time to relax, but the passenger can't get too complacent on the back when a smooth, twisty section of road presents itself en route to the next stop. Because the pillion will usually be the beast of burden and the one toting the backpack, it's even more important to be smooth and have calculated body movements.
Ideal Gear:
A set of water resistant textiles can be the sport tourers' best friend. Not only are they designed with layers and efficient ventilation systems, but also will generally function in both warm and cool weather. When you're clicking off hundreds of miles in a day you can bet you'll experience changing weather conditions, so be ready for them with the proper gear.
Bike Nighting
The temptation to wave, bounce and show off is the most powerful during city rides, especially at events like Myrtle Beach Bike Week and Daytona. But despite slower speeds and seemingly less danger there are a large number of accidents-most due to inexperienced riders and even less aware passengers.
Countless passengers have fallen off the back from an unexpected wheelie or sudden acceleration, and even more pairs of riders have decked it from simply running into each other at intersections. Though it sounds silly, these types of accidents can be avoided by simply paying attention to the road and not the distractions around you. Save the smack talk and showboating for the parking lot once you arrive at your destination, but pulling it on the road with heavy traffic and scores of other riders is a sure way to end the evening in the emergency room.
Ideal Gear:
If ever there was a place to flash some style it's at a bike night or during a city street ride. Speeds are generally lower than in the countryside, and full leathers aren't practical. Reinforced riding jeans will not only look casual but also offer protection, and when matched with short-cuff gloves, street boots and a loud leather jacket you'll be looking good while riding safe.
Tandemonium Bill D and Destiny...
"To be a good tandem team it takes times and dedication from both riders. The ability to work together is a big key point, and imagination to create and execute the tricks safely. I wouldn't say tandem changes my normal riding style... but actually helps me be an over all well rounded rider."
- Bill
"Riding tandem takes a lot of trust in your riding partner. The way you execute a trick makes or breaks you, one wrong move and you could be putting your life at risk. Having personal seat time on my own bike helps Bill and I be a better team."
- Destiny
Set The Suspension
Your ride might be set up just right for you, but what happens with an extra hundred (or two) pounds on the rear? Obviously the suspension needs to be adjusted to compensate for the extra weight. Start by adding some preload to the rear shock.
Communication Systems
The technology is available folks, so take advantage of it. There are numerous systems on the market that allow for rider/passenger communication while on the move. It's amazing how a little chitchat can make a long ride seem to fly by, and it's pretty helpful when somebody needs a bathroom break too.
