If you haven't noticed the trend, BMW went to extra lengths to cut weight and add technology. Just like you'd expect, the braking system is no different. In fact, the ABS system is the lightest in class- the complete system adds just five pounds. Four pressure sensors mean lost lever pressure and momentary "oh crap" thoughts common with older ABS systems from a pulsing lever are a thing of the past. Aiding the revolutionary system are Brembo four-pot calipers squeezing 320mm rotors up front and a single 220mm out back.
Securing the wonder brakes are a set of multi-spoke aluminum wheels that are as light as our wallets. Suspension design is also cutting edge with gargantuan 46mm upside down forks and a rear shock that sports eccentric inserts to boost ride-height an extra 10mm.
While all is different on the inside, the S 1000 RR is equally groundbreaking on the outside. From the front the lightweight asymmetrically arranged headlights are a first for sportbikes and the distinct bodywork is no less unique. As you'd guess, the bodywork is ultra lithe with thicknesses cut to just 2mm in applicable places and the sharp taillight is equally cool.
Lost in all the stats the bottom line we all wanna know is, "what'll she do?" Early reports suggest the 0-60 times are in the mid twos and top-speed would exceed the 186 MPH limiter if permitted. Though dyno numbers are yet to be seen, we wouldn't doubt if it's deep into the 160s at the wheel.
If the mile-long list of attributes this superbike wears doesn't show BMW's commitment to excellence, perhaps their campaign in WSB does! It's not easy to compete against teams that have been at it for years. No less on a brand new bike that's still bound to have teething-problems. After all, a competitive bike in WSB must have power, handling, little weight and extreme reliability to hang with the big-dogs. But somehow, if this list of attributes doesn't make you a believer, maybe the successful top-ten finishes does. Then again, 193 HP and 403 LBS is hard to argue with.
