By now we've all seen the spy shots of Honda's new V4-powered super tourer that is rumored to replace not only the current VFR800, but the lumbering ST1300 too. While the performance of the new machine is likely to be stellar, there's no disguising the fact that this bike features "challenging" aesthetics, as well as the long-awaited all-new powerplant.
We'd like to dream of something to give the Hayabusa and ZX-14R a run for their money though. A surface to surface missile that can carry two full-sized humans from LA to Vegas with mile-crushing velocity and all the comforts of first class. Here's our definitive vision of the new VFR1200.
ENGINE
While a few details have been leaked about the new engine, we're hoping the motor is more than just big numbers delivered in the usual Honda style--quiet, efficient and fuss-free. Yes, we need all the technology a 21st century Honda can give us (but please leave the VFR800-style VTEC at the door, thank you). We'd quite like a 1200cc, 190 hp motorcycle to thrust us forward in a way that rips arms from sockets if we're not paying attention, but sedate when we need it to be. Our V4 will be compact, lightweight and chain-driven.
CHASSIS
Using a heavily modified ABS-equipped CBR1000RR as a starting point, we've upgraded the swingarm to handle the extra torque but kept the superb stock brakes and suspension. To increase comfort, adjustability will factor heavily with different saddle, handlebar and footrest positions available. Why not? Even the most basic car on the planet allows the driver to move the seat to fit.
BODYWORK
Sport tourer inspired (with the emphasis on sport), our aerodynamic bodywork will slice through the skies with the greatest of ease and look like it too. Despite an oversized radiator, a compact V4 will run hot so air-assisted cooling will play a major role, thus vents force cool air over the cylinders and hot engine air is dragged out. In colder weather a manually-operated valve opens to transfer warm air into the hand grips and various vents can be opened and closed to make use of the "free" heat.
The fuel tank will hold enough for an easy 200-mile range. When you've got to get from one side of the galaxy to the other in a hurry with a smile on your face, nothing else will do.
