SSB's Take:
An affordable, capable and comfortable alternative to modern racers. It may look a bit dated, but don't let that fool you into thinking it can't hold its own.
We'd add: A jet kit and a pipe are mandatory and some steel braided brake lines along with upgraded brake pads would help teach this old dog some new tricks. Flushmounts and an undertail would complete our must-do mods. Gearing isn't as crucial on older bikes because midrange power was a reality in the nineties, unlike modern screamer 600s.
The Facts:
Hit: A great streetbike, capable chassis, strong motor, Honda reliability, La-Z-Boy comfort
Miss: Carburetors can be temperamental, she looks a bit overweight and can be too "soft" for some
Common problems: Troubles are few and far between, but look for gummed-up carbs and cracked vacuum lines. Also watch for charging problems since the rectifier/regulators are notoriously weak.
Some examples have cam chain tensioner problems so make sure you hear the bike run before it's up to normal operating temperature, since those grinding sounds tend to diminish as the bike heats up. Also watch for a bad fuel pump and relay in the event the bike is hard to start. Lastly, when the fuel pump dies (it inevitably will), simply bypass it with a straight fuel line feed and she'll run just fine!
