Conclusion
There was a time when "entry-level" meant "soulless and boring," but those days are gone thanks to bikes like the Gladius and ER-6n. They'll gladly wheelie all day, and in fact are easier to put on the rear wheel than most 1000cc sportbikes. Furthermore, both bikes pull away from lights easier than their high revving, overly-geared sportbike counterparts and are significantly more comfortable. They aren't high performance machines in direct comparison to a modern sportbike, but they're pretty versatile bikes and a lot friendlier overall. Don't knock 'em until you try 'em.
The Gladius gets our nod simply because it's smoother around the edges and feels more refined, which ultimately is the most important aspect for a new rider.

Must Have Mods
The beauty of both these bikes is that mods are a necessity. In the process of making the bike uniquely yours you also can directly improve performance.

Slip-on exhaust: No need to blow a big wad on a full system, but the stock pipe looks like a Pep Boys special and sounds equivalent.
Fender eliminator: This is purely an instant appearance upgrade, but quite necessary.
Rear sprocket: One tooth up on the rear would bring the power just a hair lower and add some nice looks to the wheel.
Brake pads/lines: Braided lines and performance pads will add better bite and an edgier look.

Slip-on exhaust: The motor sounds brilliant but is stifled by the ungainly stock pipe.
Carbon fiber fender: A few bits of CF automatically make a bike look sportier, and against the white paint scheme it would really stand out.
Brake pads/lines: This bike needs better brakes-now! Get some high performance pads along with color-coordinated lines and you'll instantly feel and look better.
