Used & abusedSuomy Spec-1R Gamble Since the first Ben Bostrom replica lid hit the market I've had a thing for Suomy paint schemes. There's something about the quirky but cool details and patterns that make the helmets look alive and not as flat as some of the other high-end brands on the shelf. Of course, looking good on the outside means nothing unless the protection and comfort are equally sweet.
When I ordered my Spec-1R I figured my size would be the same as the other brands I wear, so I put down for a size large, and when it arrived a few days later could barely squeeze my head in the thing. Whether my dome was swollen from a big evening out was arguable, but it seems that I run one size bigger with the Italian brand. After swapping out the cheek pads for thinner ones it fit like a glove and is noticeably lightweight and quiet. I refuse to wear earplugs, and the windblast and swirling noises are pretty mild on the freeway, too.
One complaint that remains from my first Spec-1R back in 2003 through today is that changing visors is a bit tricky. Either I don't have the proper technique or it's just a weird design, but I spent nearly 10 minutes trying to swap out visors. I felt like I was destroying the tabs, so I've decided to simply leave the dark visor on all the time. Maybe with a little practice I'll figure it out yet.-Dave$529.95www.suomy-usa.com(800) 524-9938
