Hours of wind-tunnel testing help make sportbike bodywork sleek and smooth, but those elegant designs are the result of pure physics. The more aerodynamic a bike's bodywork is, the lower the drag coefficient, and top speed all comes down to drag coefficient and surface area. As speed is increased, a lower drag coefficient will allow for both a higher top end and increase stability.
Stock signals are usually big and bulky and stick out of the bodywork to meet DOT regulations, and along with your mirrors (and shoulders) your top-end drive is greatly affected.
Probably of more importance to most riders is the fact that stock blinkers just look stupid. For legal reasons though, the OEMs have to adhere to a certain set of guidelines when designing bikes-but that doesn't mean we have to.
While adding a set of flush-mount turn signals isn't likely to improve the chances of breaking any land speed records, it does offer an easy way to clean up the frontal area of any sportbike while keeping it legal (more or less).
Flush-mount signals typically sit either recessed or flat against the bodywork, and the standard bulbs are often high-intensity LEDs that are highly visible. Some signals come in true plug-and-play form with factory connectors, while others require splicing into the wiring.
But what if your bike comes with the signals integrated into the bodywork or mirrors? Some companies offer mirror block-offs that include blinkers or slightly narrower Euro-style lights that fit the factory bodywork. Either way, aftermarket turn signals give an upgraded look that will improve aerodynamics with a cool custom touch.
