The days of pressing a button and receiving an engine blowing burst of nitrous are over. This isn’t The Fast And The Furious; with the right equipment playing with nitrous isn’t an out of control answer for more speed. In the simplest sense, nitrous aids in fuel combustion by increasing oxygen density inside the cylinders (direct port)—spray it in and you’ll get some extra boom in the combustion chamber.
The team at MODOtek Performance devised a two-stage progressive nitrous controller with numerous input options and built-in data logging for after-run readouts that show exactly what is going on throughout the rev range of each gear. Programmable input and output options such as throttle position, RPM, vehicle speed and time delay dictate when and how hard nitrous injects into the system. When activated, a first gear lockout mode makes sure the system does not juice up right off the jump. Each stage is independently programmable too. For instance, the nitrous could start flowing at 45 percent when holding full throttle in fifth gear and reappear at 100 percent spray above 160 MPH in sixth gear. The configurations of what happens and when are endless.
The controller uses PWM valve control, a technical title for electric pulses that rapidly open and close the spray valve, resulting in a nitrous flow governed by a valve which can partially open when needed as opposed to only opening fully. The advantage is the ability to fine tune nitrous delivery for a smooth power curve.
Programming the controller starts by connecting into a laptop with the supplied software and USB cord. After a run, the data logging program helps flush out any issues and potential points of refinement by way of a power curve graph and display noting the when, where and how of the N2O delivery.
While this isn’t the only progressive nitrous controller on the market it is one of the most affordable. That will leave more money in your pocket for bottle refills.
