Replacing your chain means a costly trip to the shop or braving it yourself, but unless you have a proper chain tool you’re in for a world of frustration when it comes to breaking and pressing the metal rope. Cheap tools are often one-hit wonders, as they have a knack for breaking mid-process, so when it comes to a chain tool, spend a little more and save in the long run.
I can recall long ago purchasing three cheap chain tools in two years because each one broke. The cost of three cheapos easily equaled that of the Motion Pro unit I eventually bought. Now, many years later I still have the same chain tool and it still breaks and presses chains like it always has.
Admittedly it takes some getting used to, but once you’ve mastered the art it’s easy-money. Inadvertently I’ve broken several of the shanks, but I was being lazy and not following the instructions. Thankfully the shank replacements are cheap and can be swapped in seconds.
If you’re a DIY kind of rider and want to start taking on chain replacements at home, the Motion Pro unit is a wise investment.
