Basic maintenance is crucial to keeping your ride running in tip-top form, and nothing is more important than regular oil changes.
You could take your bike to the service department of course, but they'll charge you an arm and a leg for what only takes about 15 minutes.
 1: Get the motor warmed up...  1: Get the motor warmed up to normal operating temperature. Use a rearstand to prop up the bike for easy access to the drain plug (on the lower left underside of the motor). The kickstand is fine, but a rearstand gives a bit more space. |  2: A 17mm socket will loosen...  2: A 17mm socket will loosen the oil drain plug bolt. Set the ratchet to "loosen" and test it in your hand first so that you don't tighten the bolt by accident. |  3: Remove the drain bolt and...  3: Remove the drain bolt and let that old oil drain out. |
 4: As the oil drains, remove...  4: As the oil drains, remove the three 4mm allen bolts from the left mid fairing. |  5: Don't forget the bolt under...  5: Don't forget the bolt under the left rearset. |  6: Remove the pop rivet from...  6: Remove the pop rivet from the front of the belly. |
 7: There's another pop rivet...  7: There's another pop rivet underneath. |  8: Remove the fairing for...  8: Remove the fairing for access to the oil filter. |  9: There's the old oil filter,...  9: There's the old oil filter, right within easy reach. |
 10: If you're strong enough...  10: If you're strong enough loosen it with your hand, otherwise use an oil plug wrench (you can get one from the local shop). |  11: There's what you'll be...  11: There's what you'll be looking at once the filter is removed. |  12: Rub some oil over the...  12: Rub some oil over the new filter's O-ring, then screw it back on and tighten it up. Very hand tight is fine, but an extra 1/4 turn with a wrench is ideal. |
 13: After tightening back...  13: After tightening back up the drain bolt and replacing the fairing the same way it came off, head over to the right side of the bike. Remove the oil fill cap. |  14: We're using Spectro 10-40...  14: We're using Spectro 10-40 full synthetic...about 4 liters. |  15: The oil level sight window...  15: The oil level sight window will tell you where the level is. At about 4 liters you'll be right at the top mark. Replace the fill cap, warm the motor, then check the level again and top up if needed. You're done! |
