Knee Deep Track and Canyon Club is based in the Los Angeles area and was formed out of a common desire to offer an alternative to the local motorcycle scene with a focus on performance riding. Club Spokesman Robert Owens explained: "The reason why we formed Knee Deep was because in one summer we lost 11 guys in the Los Angeles bike scene. A lot of that was due to inexperienced stunt riding. We got tired of losing guys to accidents.
We try to push canyon and track riding more than stunting. We also changed our everyday way of riding and feel like you don't have to go 110 mph just to get where you are going."
Knee Deep focuses heavily on learning how to ride motorcycles the right way. Owens elaborated by saying: "We have guys that don't know how to ride their bikes. While we are not instructors, we are all experienced riders. When we go to the canyons, we keep one or two veterans up front so the newer riders will learn cornering lines and braking points.
We have a vision of the future where riders from all the clubs will actually race against each other on the track. They can wear their colors and make it a competition between the clubs for bragging rights. The main point being that it's something to see who actually wins at the track and not on the streets."
The club includes members from all walks of life with one thing in common-the love of racing bikes. Said Owens: "We don't do the prospect thing. We are older guys. When we recruit people, we start by talking to them to see what they are all about. After that we have them participate in several outings to see how they ride."
Wearing proper equipment is also a major concern for all the club members, and they come together to help provide proper gear for riders that don't have it.
Knee Deep definitely has a different outlook on club riding. While they appreciate the status quo, their motto reflects their beliefs of "Learn what your motorcycle can do and respect it."
