Punching his way into the record books, longtime drag racer Ryan Ostergard obliterated the old 2000cc Altered Gas record by over 20 MPH at 193 MPH on his naked Suzuki Hayabusa.
In an effort to bring you racing from all ends of the world we paid a visit to the salt flats for a weekend of octane, boost and speed. Just outside the sleepy town of Wendover, Utah, lies a vast sea of white so widespread and so flat you can actually see the curvature of the earth. It isn't snow, nor is it sand; it's 30,000 acres of salt, the remains of what was once an enormous lake. And on this 47-square mile stretch of flat salt, thousands of gearheads have gathered for over 50 years in a time-honored tradition to celebrate the symphony of speed.
Forget standing-mile racing, Bonneville Speed Week is the heart of land-speed racing and where it all began. In fact, it's aptly coined the "fastest place on earth." How fast? How about over 700 MPH in rocket-powered vehicles.
But George Jetson vehicles aside, motorcycles have been a part of the scene for decades, and if you've seen the Anthony Hopkins movie, The World's Fastest Indian, you'd get an idea of how fanatical the high-speed riders can be.
