We thrashed the new ZX-10R...
We thrashed the new ZX-10R around the racetrack and didn't find any issues, but Kawasaki must know something we don't.
In an unexpected move, Kawasaki placed a technical hold on all 2011 ZX-10R motorcycles. In other words, the all new 2011 ZX-10R has been recalled.
Although at the time of press we are unsure as to the exact reason for the recall, we do know it's not just a bad blinker unit or malfunctioning foot peg since the Kawi press release clearly explains that Team Green is prepared to buy back any motorcycles that have already been sold. Taken directly from the release: "Those who have taken delivery of a unit will be instructed to return the unit to the dealership for a full refund and will be among the first to have the option of receiving a new unit once the technical hold has been lifted."
Rumors are running rampant as to the cause, but several undisclosed sources suggest it might be serious engine issues in the form of lower ring failure, a faulty shift fork design or even defective cylinder plating.
For now we're left to speculate and only hope it's a minor glitch. While it's easy to get upset, we respect Kawasaki for stepping up and properly addressing the situation-a stand-up move that's more admirable than the stance other manufacturers have taken in similar situations.
We hammered the bike for two days around a racetrack and didn't see signs of any malfunctioning parts or engine issues. Perhaps Kawasaki discovered that there's "potential" for a failure and has issued the recall to be on the safe side.
For now, sit tight and don't let the recall deter you from buying one of the most groundbreaking sportbikes to come from Japan in years.
