"Two years in the making...thousands of man hours...to achieve one goal: total domination." So begins Todd Colbert's latest opus, Judgment Day 2 (DVD, $24.95)--and let us be the first to tell you, his wasn't a wasted effort. JD2 is certainly the best street-freestyle video we'll see this year, perhaps for many years. In the fast-changing world of street freestyle most DVDs are DOA, showcasing stunts that are already played-out by the time the disc hits the shelves. Not JD2: Featuring stunt footage shot as recently as spring 2003, it showcases the cutting edge of the sport--Dan Jackson's insane switchback burnouts and no-handed ankle stoppies, Patrick Stephen's Captain Americas, ape hangers, cliff hangers, scraped and parked 12 O'Clocks, and endless circles, it's all here, in spades. Not only do Colbert and crew hit on quality, but quantity, too. Montages from 19 teams are presented, including all the biggest names: Colbert's own Team X-Treem, of course, and also Team XMX, Pure Bred Riders, DM Extreme, Point of Balance and many more. JD2 is a first-class effort in every respect. No doubt that big money was shelled out for music rights, what with heavy hitters such as DMX, P.O.D., Saliva and Disturbed on the track list, and the bonus material is actually "bonus" material--not recut or unedited versions of main content (what a concept!). The bonus bits were especially satisfying. A hilarious Kyle Woods gets 10 minutes or so to show once and for all that if he isn't the most talented man in stunting (and he's up there), he's at least the most insane--is there anything that cat won't try once? A 15-minute documentary on Team X-Treem's recent sojourn to Jamaica is pure gold, and so is the indulgent "Girls" chapter, certain to please the perverts in the house, but safely tucked into the bonus area to protect tender eyes. JD2 seeks total domination of stunt DVDs? Mission accomplished, and then some.
