Core 6 rider Chris "Teach" McNeil, shown here way up in an acid drop, had to settle for first loser at Daytona this year. But our boy Teach knows a thing or two about homework, so expect him to come back even stronger in 2004.
Daytona International Speedway likes to advertise itself as the "World Center of Racing," but for one weekend this past October it was the World Center of Stunting as well when the famed Super Speedway hosted the Xtreme Sportbike Association's second national championships. The nation's premier practitioners of street freestyle brought their best moves to the Speedway that weekend, and after the tire smoke cleared it was Kansas City's Dan Jackson who walked out on top. As brilliant as Jackson's runs were, though, it's hardly fair to say he stole the show--with riders like Chris "Teach" McNeil, Thew Blankstrom, Anthony D'Orsi and Ronnie Hurst also throwin' down on pit road, there were sick tricks everywhere you turned. And we've got the pictures to prove it.
Happiness is a high-chair scrape, says Tony D Freestyle's Anthony D'Orsi. Guess Tony D's got that new hand-brake setup dialed in, huh? | Got spread? Nick Hill of Scooter Trash sure does. | Introducing the new king of Daytona! In addition to a really big cup and the coveted numero-uno plate, "Crazy" Dan Jackson also took home $2000. |
OK, so it wasn't as impressive as the 973-foot world-record endo he rolled a month later, but 781 feet was enough to earn Ryan Cramer the longest-endo cup at the XSBA finals, beating out Thew Blankstrom's 765-footer. | Reality Racing's Ronnie Giovelli smokes one at 12 o'clock. | Seat stand, no-throttle-hand wheelie by Mark Lonchar of Motopsychoz. |
Geared Up's Brunelle brothers--Aaron on top and Jacob on the bottom--showing off for Stone Brother's cameras. | Stand-up no-hander by Teach McNeil. | John Risconsin with Legion Stunt Team doing a stand-up no-hander. |
All along the watchtower--Jacob Brunelle gets all up and over this one. | Just a little more to the right! Thomas "The Tongue" Evans demonstrates a creative new use for the Speedway's temporary fencing. | "Hey, buddy--can you spare a brother an inverted fork?" After Dan Jackson lunched his fork in a practice crash, DV8's Ronnie Hurst graciously lent Jackson his suspenders so he could finish out the event. It's good to have friends. |
Dan Jackson climbs into a coffin. | Geared Up's Gregg Vanfossen makes another offering to the tire gods. | Better than a Barcalounger--Ronnie Hurst's switchback recliner. |
Seals again, goin' low in a circle skitch. | Johnny Seals of KC's Most Wanted shows some class jumping to switchback. | The top three riders at Daytona, from left to right: Third, Ronnie Hurst (DV8), Second, Chris McNeil (Core 6), First, Dan Jackson (Team XMX). |
